COEURAGE MISSION, VISION AND CALL TO ACTION

MISSION STATEMENT

Coeurage Ensemble’s mission is to develop and perform high quality "Pay What You Want" performances for Los Angeles and online audiences through processes that are ensemble driven, community conscious, intersectional and antiracist.

VISION STATEMENT

Coeurage Ensemble’s vision is a theater company that continually lifts up artistic voices from the global majority, provides equitable access to theater, reaches traditionally underserved audiences and explores new storytelling languages in emerging media—all while producing work that reflects core values of egalitarianism and hope for a better world.

CALL TO ACTION

In response to the dangers of Covid-19, growing economic instability, and the need to dismantle systemically racist structures within society and confront our own unconscious biases, Coeurage recognizes that major internal changes must be made on a number of artistic and organizational levels. We are committed to boldly moving forward in this new world by producing with greater intention on diversity, equity and inclusion. This commitment extends to the writers, designers, and directors we work with, the systems under which we function, and the composition of our artistic ensemble and board.

Over the next five years, we will do this in five distinct ways:

  1. Immediately increase decision-making transparency to provide all Ensemble members with access, input and understanding.

  2. Reenvision the process of choosing works to ensure intersectional and minoritized voices are meaningfully reflected in our performances.

  3. Critically examine where and how our internal systems prevent diversity, equity and inclusion and reinvent these systems to ensure our organizational structure acknowledges complex histories and incorporates a diverse spectrum of voices.

  4. Raise sufficient funding to move away from a primarily volunteer model.

  5. Support equitable access to theatre by investing in new technologies while maintaining our commitment to live theater.

“Coeurage” takes its name from a merging of the French word for heart, coeur, and rage, meaning a vehement passion, or an unbridled expression of emotion. Our hearts must grow even larger now as we raise our collective voices with uninhibited passion to shape this chaotic world.
