Pre-Production: "Failure: a Love Story" Audio Adaptation

Joseph V. Calarco and Philip Dawkins Adapt Failure: a Love Story for radio, with Michael Matthews returning to direct.

STORY:

As part of Coeurage’s efforts to translate our work to an online friendly space, Co-Artistic Director Joseph V. Calarco partnered with playwright Philip Dawkins to reimagine his wonderful play Failure: a Love Story for audio.  Michael Matthews, who helmed the original production and won an Ovation Award for his efforts, is returning to direct. Gregory Nabours, who composed a rich musical score for the piece, is also slated to return. For new visitors to Coeurage, Failure is one of our most well-regarded productions, having had a successful run in 2015 and a remount in 2016 with Center Theatre Group as part of their Block Party program. Listeners can expect a rich musical and atmospheric audio landscape to accompany Dawkins’s beautiful language.

Failure: a Love Story is a whimsical, magical fable about the journey of Mortimer Mortimer and the Fail sisters in their 1928 Chicago clock shop.  The sisters, though tragic twists of fate, all die before their time…but not before Mortimer falls in love with each of them. Bittersweet and enchanting, Failure reminds us that “just because something ends, that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a great success.”

Joseph V. Calarco will Sound Design. The cast will include Zach Brown, Joseph V. Calarco, June Carryl, Margaret Katch, Jane Lui, Gregory Nabours, Kurt Quinn, Nicole Shalhoub, and Brittney S. Wheeler.
